Refractive Error
At this session we will cover refractive error
We'll start by reviewing refractive error definitions and principles and move on to a review of the literature regarding the burden of refractive error globally, in the US, and in particular vulnerable populations.
We'll follow with a introduction to the practice of refraction.
During the hands on session we'll move into the exam rooms on the 7th floor of the EEI building and practice using the lensometers, autorefractors, retinoscopes and phoropters.
Attached below are reprints of articles regarding the burden of refractive error. There's a lot of material there. You don't need to read these in depth.
To get a head start on the practical aspects of refraction please review the material at the following websites.
OphthoBook Optics - this is an introduction with definitions and great illustrations. It's definitely worth reviewing in its entirety
MedRounds Refraction Tutorial - this is an incredible resource. It's as close as you can get to hands on refraction training without having a patient in front of you. This will be very helpful for students who want to help with refraction during GES missions.
