Guerrilla Eye Service



The Guerrilla Eye Service of the UPMC Eye Center is dedicated to eliminating barriers to eye care for patients in the Western Pennsylvania area. The GES is staffed by students, residents and faculty who are dedicated to providing comprehensive eye care to the residents of our area who would otherwise go without.

GES Mission for the Steubenville VA
Steubenville High School

Our mission on Saturday November 10 will be to the Steubenville High School in the Steubenville OH. This will be a screening event for the Steubenville branch of the VA.  This is one of the few “screening-type” of events that GES is involved with, but because the VA provides exceptional follow-up for the veterans, we are able to refer those in whom a potential problem is discovered to the nearest VA where they will get complete care. We'll be screening about 200 veterans over the course of the morning. This event is fast paced, rewarding and a lot of fun. The school is at 420 North 4th St in Steubenville OH. Montefiore 9th floor

Our mission on Monday November 5 will be a screening in cooperation with the Organization of Chinese Americans. We'll be on the 9th floor of Montefiore checking vision, pressure and taking nonmydriatic photos. This is a fast paced and fun event (and the food is great). We'll start at 6:30pm and will probably be done around 10:30. Due to limited space we'll need to limit attendance to four students.

Our mission on Saturday, November 5, 2010 will be to the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Expo at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  This will be a screening mission and will focus on assessing risk as well as taking photos using the nonmydriatic camera.

The EXPO is a free event and includes health screenings, cooking demonstrations, product and service exhibitors, as well as leading experts talking about diabetes management and prevention.   Dr Alex Anetakis will be giving a brief patient oriented lecture and will lead the mission.

We'll need experienced GES team members to assist Dr Anetakis on this outing.

Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration

At this session of GES Boot Camp we're going to cover diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.
Please read the attached “Essentials” handouts and use this information and whatever you can get from the web to answer the questions in the “Case Conference” handouts.
When we meet we'll go over the answers to the questions.
Please keep track of the web resources you use so I can share the best sites with the group.

After the case conference discussions we'll head into the clinic rooms again to practice techniques relevant to diabetes and macular degeneration. We'll use the Amsler Grid, the direct ophthalmoscope, the indirect ophthalmoscope and the retinal camera . We'll spend some time looking at retina photos and optical coherence tomography images.
