Microbiology: Ocular Virology

Goals and objectives

  • To know the identity of the most common viral agents causing diseases affecting the eye,  and the type of viruses they are, so that appropriate treatments can be considered
  • To understand the mechanisms by which different viruses induce clinical signs of ocular disease
  • To know the current treatment antivirals their model of action, and their limitations when  used to block virus replication induced clinical disease.
  • To know appropriate circumstances in which steroid treatment is used to modulate virus induced immune mediated inflammatory disease
